Ben Church chatted with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about making a positive difference with the 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar.
Author Roy T. Bennett once said: “Learn to light a candle in the darkest moments of someone’s life. Be the light that helps others see; it is what gives life its deepest significance.” Ben Church embodies this wise quote.
2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar
On being a part of the 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar, he remarked, “The Australian Firefighters Calendar has been helping charities for decades with new causes and foundations being supported every year.”
“Look the support between Australia and the U.S. in times of crisis highlights the deep bond between the two nations. When Australia faced its devastating bushfires in 2019 to 2020, the U.S. sent firefighters to help battle the blazes, just as Australian crews have assisted the U.S. during severe wildfire seasons. This mutual aid demonstrates the global camaraderie among first responders,” Church elaborated.
“Now, through initiatives like the Australian Firefighters Calendar, Australians give back by supporting causes such as Florida hurricane relief and the LA wildfires. It’s a full-circle moment of compassion and resilience, proving that when disaster strikes, international support can make all the difference,” he added.
Church on his firefighting experience
Church has been a firefighter for eight years now. “It has flown by but I have been able to help so many in need, which is the core reason of why I love being a fiery,” he admitted.
Daily motivations
On his daily motivations as a firefighter, he said, “Instagram pages like ‘Brotherhood Buffs‘ and listening to David Goggins still getting after it as a smoke jumper pretty much sums up any motivation you need.”
“Go get ’em Brothers!” Church exclaimed.
Career-defining moments
Regarding his career-defining moments, he shared, “Everyday is different in the job. I’ve had multiple tragic situations giving CPR to fathers or husbands while their wives and children look on, rescuing a husband from a car accident while his deceased wife was next to him and other situations.”
Being a firefighter in the digital age
On being a firefighter in the digital age, Church said, “Social media has positives and negatives like everything. Positives are we as first responders have the ability to share ideas and our causes like promoting the Australian Firefighters Calendar.”
“Also, it’s a common goal of most firefighters not to end up on YouTube for the wrong reasons… I think the audience knows what I mean,” he acknowledged.
Advice for young and aspiring firefighters
For young and emerging firefighters, he said, “Make sure you’re fit and capable to do the job. Hoses are heavy and so are people. You want to be a contributing member of the fire service not a burden.”
Success
Regarding his definition of the word success, Church said, “Success is extinguishing fires with mates and having a beer after work when everyone goes home safely. Maybe also having a hot wife to come home to with a few kids to share some love.”
“I’m still searching for that wife to have kids with by the way,” he said with a sweet laugh.
