Artist and choreographer Bobby Newberry chatted with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about his new album “Dopamine Rollercoaster.”

“Dopamine Rollercoaster is my first full-length album. I put out many Eps and tons of singles, but I felt like I needed to put out a body of work, and put it all together and release it as a chapter of my life. It’s from 2018 to 2021,” he said.

He listed “Ride” as his personal favorite track on the EP due to its “sentimental value.” “They all have different feels, and they are from different time periods,” he admitted.

While he wasn’t going for a certain theme, he was going for “whatever he was inspired by.” “I just wanted to write about it and talk about it,” he said.

“I hope listeners and fans listen to this album all the way through in the order of which it is being released,” he said. “It goes through many different feels and elements, from a party vibe, to a hot energy vibe to feel good, driving with the windows all the way down in the summer. One of my favorite parts of the album Is the outro. It has a really pretty outro and it feels nice.”

He spoke about serving as a choreographer for such artists as Eminem, Nicki Minaj, and Missy Elliott. “I am constantly by artists that I find work really hard and they strive for a level of excellence. That has been instilled in me by working with such incredible talented artists prior to me being an artist,” he said.

The digital age

On being an artist in the digital age, he said, “It’s tricky. It’s such an oversaturated industry. It used to be 40,000 songs a day being released, now there are 100,000 songs a day being released. It is difficult for independent artists to compete with larger artists that have a backing. I’m still here and I got to perform on the stage of LA Pride, which was the same stage that Mariah Carey performed on. Now, I’m headlining OC Pride this weekend. That is a full circle and big nostalgic moment for me.”

He noted that he hopes to come to New York to do some live performances in July. “I would love to perform at one of Jake Resnicow’s summer or fall events, he throws the best events in New York. I would love to work with Jake,” he said.

Newberry shared that Vanessa Hudgens is doing well. “She is doing great, she is very busy, she’s a busy girl,” he said. “I am excited for everything that is going on with her.”

Advice for aspiring artists

For young and aspiring artists, he said, “Continue to work really hard and don’t get comfortable with where you are at, and always strive more. Trying to continue to stay inspired because it can get difficult as an artist to lose your inspiration.”

“Inspiration is key for creativity as an artist. Try to continuously find something to be inspired by,” he added.

On the title of the current chapter of his life, he said with a sweet laugh, “Figuring It Out.”

If he were to have any superpower, it would be to “control people’s minds.” “That would be the most useful power to have,” he said.

He listed Diplo, Jessie Reyez, and Lana Del Rey, as his dream collaboration choices in music.

Newberry defined the word success as “feeling fulfilled and being happy.”
