AI prompt engineering

In a world that is rapidly being influenced by AI, it is crucial to provide the technology with quality prompts so we can harness its full potential. AI prompt engineering has therefore emerged as a process to guide generative AI towards creating the desired output by crafting specific instructions that the AI can directly follow.

Most IT professionals are confident in their ability to use AI when in fact only 12% are shown to actually have the capabilities to perform effective prompt engineering. So now companies are in dire need of professionals who have the skills to use and understand AI prompt engineering. However, more than half of the workers around the world have average AI skills that need to be upgraded. About 60% of IT leaders also agree that AI comprises some of the largest skill gaps seen within candidate pools.

Although the majority of professionals have a basic understanding of how to use AI, they do not have the advanced knowledge that could take them further in their careers. This includes the ability to use generative AI effectively in the specific work that they do, obtain the best outputs from the AI models they use, and leverage secure data sources while using the technology. All of this has culminated into a 50% hiring gap, meaning it is now really important for workers to improve their AI skills.

Gaining AI literacy can teach users how AI works and how to approach AI. AI prompt engineering can greatly improve AI literacy by helping users understand what kind of prompts can lead AI models to create the best possible results. There are several ways one can structure an AI prompt, from a chain-of-symbol approach to a non-text promoting approach as well as a negative prompts option when it comes to images and video.

More than 70% of IT leaders are making it clear that AI skill gaps need to be addressed quickly. Developing up-to-date AI skills will be vital as AI technology continues to grow and evolve.
