Everyone has different career goals but landing that “dream job” is usually pretty high on that list.

But do we ever consider what exactly that looks like for us? And maybe an even more important question: how do we get it?

Well, this article will cover just that! But instead of “dream job” our guest likes to call it your “ideal career” because no one should be dreaming about work!

We interviewed TikTok’s favorite Career Coach Sho Dewan, otherwise known as @workhap, on TikTok. Sho is a LinkedIn Top Voice and his work has been featured in HubSpot, HR Magazine, and LinkedIn News. With over 1.2 Million Likes on his TikTok videos and 120,000+ followers across social media, it’s clear that people can’t get enough of Sho’s career and job-search advice!

Backstory About Sho

Sho’s coaching history goes back to his time at UC Irvine. Even during his student days, he was coaching and giving interview advice to his friends and peers who would go on to land offers at some of the best companies in the world including Google, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, etc. It was then he first considered a career in Coaching but went the traditional corporate route and started at EY as a Management Consultant in New York City.

While the consulting experience was new and challenging, the itch to try out HR & Recruitment still lurked in the background. So after a few years in New York, he packed his bags and went off to Hong Kong to start his new role as a Recruiter. Although very different from consulting, this was the work Sho wanted to do from the very beginning. From recruitment and then to transitioning into HR, he started his Career Coaching & Training company, Workhap, in 2019.

What’s does Workhap’s Coaching Process Look Like?

When Sho works with any new clients, he takes a 3 step approach to identify where someone is in their career and how to get them to where they want to be. Most of his clients have anywhere from 5 to 20+ years of experience and are usually in the middle of what Sho calls the “Cycle of Unfulfillment.” This is when they know they are unhappy at work and try to do something different only to return back to square 1. If you also feel like you are stuck in this cycle, this is what Sho recommends you do:

  • Get Clarity on Exactly What You Want to Do

The first step is the most important step. You need to get incredibly clear on what your goals are and what your ideal career looks like. Don’t focus so much on your past but instead focus on what you want in the future. When people have been in the same role for a long time, they often get into a fixed mindset and fear the idea of “starting over.” But most times, you don’t have to start over. If you…

  • Leverage Your Transferable Skills

A career pivot doesn’t have to be this scary, new thing. You may already have everything you need. Look at the job description and understand the key skills that are required to be successful for your next role. From there, review your past experiences and/or projects and leverage your transferable skills. Sometimes the job search is more about your personal brand and story than fitting the job description to a tee. The final step is to…

  • Think like a Recruiter!

Last but not least — get into the mindset that of a recruiter and hiring manager. If you know the type of candidate they are looking for, it will be a lot easier for you to become that person. So do your research, connect with others on the team, and deeply understand the role at hand and the challenges the team faces. Once you know these details, your ideal career becomes that much closer to becoming a reality!
