Cuban-American actor Carlo Mendez chatted with #Powerjournalist Markos Papadatos about starring in the upcoming film “20 Pounds to Happiness.”

According to Variety, Yelyna De León will star in and direct the romantic comedy “20 Pounds to Happiness” from a screenplay by “Real Women Have Curves” writer Josefina López.

“Yelyna is amazing… she directed it and starred in it… Kudos to her… she is raising awareness on female filmmakers,” Mendez said. “The script by Josefina is also great.”

Mendez and Riley Shanahan co-star in the movie “20 Pounds to Happiness,” which also includes Christiana Leucas, Soledad St. Hilaire, Iyari Limon, Rafael Sigler and Tricia Cruz. “It’s a heartfelt comedy,” he admitted.

“20 Pounds to Happiness” is De León’s debut as a feature film director. The movie follows a full-figured Latina in a “Real Women Have Curves” support group who must decide between staying loyal to her girlfriends or risking the loss of her dream man. López and De León serve as producers.

On the message that he hopes people get out of this movie, Mendez concluded, “Learn to be yourself and love yourself.”

Mendez is known for his television roles in “9-1-1,” “Superior Donuts,” “Parks and Recreation” and “The Real Rob.” He is currently in the Emmy award-winning show “The Bay” and is in production on “Dexter: Origins,” which premieres this December.

Most recently, Mendez starred in his first leading role in “Demise,” and he nailed it.
