On February 12, Academy Award winner Troy Kotsur of “CODA” delivered a soaring American Sign Language (ASL) national anthem interpretation at the 2023 Super Bowl.
Kotsur’s interpretation of “The Star-Spangled Banner” was expressive, passionate, distinct, and resonant. The Oscar winner’s zest was infectious and he was able to move viewers on an emotional level, and he complimented country star Chris Stapleton superb musical rendition, which featured his rich and husky baritone vocals. A true musical event all around. They both knocked it out of the ballpark. Well done, and it is safe to say that they both upstaged this year’s Halftime Show..

Last year, Troy Kotsur won the Academy Award for “Best Supporting Actor” for his acting work in “CODA.” This marked a historic win for Kotsur because he became the first Deaf man to win an Oscar, and the second Deaf performer overall along with Marlee Matlin, who won for “Best Actress” for “Children of a Lesser God.”
